Photojournalism at the North Adams Transcript

I became interested in photojournalism as an undergraduate at North Adams State College. I was a regular contributor to The Beacon, the school’s weekly newspaper and served as photo editor for one semester.

A little more than a year after graduation I landed the job as chief photographer at the North Adams Transcript. Back in 1992, I hadn’t planned on staying long but now I cannot imagine working anywhere else. I love living in Northern Berkshire County and working for the North Adams Transcript, a newspaper which has a reputation of award winning photography dating back to the legendary Randy Trabold, who worked at the newspaper for over 40 years before retiring in 1979. It is my aim to uphold that tradition.

In my years of experience, I made the transition from black and white film to digital and look forward to what the future of photojournalism has to bring. Until 2000, I was still developing film in the newspaper’s black and white darkroom. The newspaper only started publishing color photos on their front pages back in 1999. Now every photo taken by a staff photographer or reporter is digital.

I have enjoyed being a small town photojournalist and the lifestyle has afforded me opportunities I never would have had in any other field; from meeting and photographing celebrities and heads of state, to covering events from the behind the scenes. The schedule is sometimes crazy, I like to say flexible and sometimes annual events seem mundane as they occur year after year, but you never know what your day is going to bring. Every day is different and I find every assignment challenging as I look for an interesting point of view to share with our readers.

And the experience hasn’t been limited to photography. Over the years I have also written news stories and had weekly columns on various subjects ranging from living with dogs to politics and other “day in the life” topics.

I hope to continue being a photojournalist until such a time as I, either decide to make a career change, or the industry changes and my job becomes obsolete.
